Here it is, finally. My new Empire Longboard.
Slightly more rocker and a rounded squash tail make it perform
even better than my old board. The squash tail gives it
more drive and combined with the bit more rocker and
the thinned out rails I really found the optimum
combination for me. Thanks, Jason at OM for doing
such an amazing job with the resin tint!
This board flys like a rocket and
I'm looking forward to every session on it!

...Mark had so much fun indeed that I came home one night

last week and he had all the boys (including the dog)

shaping their own "vehicle of fun".

There was all sorts of materials laying around from

old wetsuits to old skateboards. They were so keen

that even the heaviest rain shower couldn't stop them..

I can't wait to snap some shots of the test riding session

when the next big swell hits...

I only knew this place from the "Endless Summer" movie.

So I decided to see for myself what this country has to offer..

This was my first trip to Africa and I was quite amazed

Castle and Dinas

The Iron Age hill fort of Castle-an-Dinas is a prominent landmark
just south of St Columb Major. It was home to a legendary king, played a part
in the development of our democracy, and been the site of executions, battles
and sinister murder and suicide.
Me and Mark went up there at last year's Midsummer Eve Bonfire celebration
to find out more about this place.
The photography was tricky, as there is not much left of the
iron Age fort. So there is only it's unique atmosphere to catch.
I'm pleased with the result and the article published
in the June edition of "Cornwall today".

I love the light and the colours in there,
they just seem to have more depth than digital photos.
The second one is the inside of a water fountain.
I love it how the light and the flowing water build a whole
new picture: I called it "the shell"

It was really exciting working on the latest Drift feature about Glass Tiger surfboards. I went down to his workshop which is situated in a Falmouth boatyard. With so many boards today arriving here in containers from overseas, it was refreshing and fitting to see wood finished boards made in a small workshop next to the sea and among classic wooden boats. The variety of tools and materials meant lots to shoot. Not only this but I was also let loose on the page design which turned out great, if I do say so myself!

Yesterday morning I found myself on one of my daily early morning walks

to check the surf before work. Hidden by a thick curtain of mist the surf was invisible.

I only could hear the waves in the distance roaring to the shore

while the sun was slowly warming up the day...

south coast sun

When the swell turns big and the wind is from the north I always ask myself if it is going to be another one of those endless drives round and round the south coast getting really frustrated ending up back at the overcrowded and average beach you started at - this weekend turned out different.

After a nice Saturday lie in and relaxed breakfast, I was on the way for another search down south. After meeting some friends, we arrived at a spot I had wanted to surf for a while but never caught right. To my surprise, it was quietly peeling along with just two guys out. I plunged myself into the sea and surfed this nice little reef in a beautiful setting scoring some long rides. Unfortunately, it got a bit crowded later on, but who cares the sun was out.

We spent the whole day at the beach and when I drove home, I felt content after an amazing day.

of his surf lodge. Donny moved from San Diego to the Philippines

about 9 years ago after he fell in love with this place

on one of his many surf travels around the world.

Baler, home of the making of Apocalypse Now and remote Philippine surfing outpost.

Only accessible by a slow bus journey through the dramatic Sierra Madre Mountains

and located on the Pacific ocean which stretches endlessly towards Mexico.

It is the capital of the region but still only a small town surrounded by lush jungle,

coconut groves, mangroves and series of serpentine waterways. For a longtime access was difficult

due to high activity of the communist New Peoples Army rebel group.

Today there is a thriving surf community and many undiscovered waves in a remote paradise.

Traveling at Christmas in the Philippines isn't recommended
and we had to find out the hard way. Hundreds of people plus their
Christmas luggage waiting for transport back to their families.
We ended up on a bus with twice as many people than the vehicles capacity,
on top of that the bus left 2 hours later than planned and took 10h instead of
the promising 7. A journey from dawn till dusk.

Kiddos Point

We stumbled across a point break near the town of Cabugao.

This small fishing village is well off the beaten track and rarely visisted

by travelling surfers. On arrival we fouind the only accommodation to be closed,

but the local surfers instantly found us a comfortable homestay.

After settling in we were introduced to all the young local surfers

who unfortunately have to share boards as there is much poverty here.

We even met Kiddo, whom the point is named after.

Searching for waves off the beaten track, we arrived at the beautiful Saud Beach, Pagudpud, northern Luzon.The friendly and ever smiling locals have set us at ease as wait for the swell to arrive and slow ourselves down to mirror the pace of life here. Our room faces a promising reef to small yet to surf but I've been keeping my eyes on it since 2 days now hoping the ever growing swell will bring what we are hoping for...

After my planned trip to the longboard heaven of Costa Rica had to be aborted for various reasons, I found myself on plane heading for Bali. Whilst I enjoy fast and hollow surf like most other surfers,I had been put off Bali by macho talk I had heard in the past,of shallow and dangerous reefs plus being told how you need a helmet and wetsuit top for protection from these reefs, that are hungry for your skin. However my boyfriend had convinced me it was jus big talk and there were only a couple of spots like that, which we would avoid and I had always wanted to see Bali for myself.

As my boardbag appeared at the baggage collection point after the flight, I was struck with fright as one end of my bag was torn to shreds. When I opened my bag, my worst fears were confirmed, the last twelve inches of my board had been smashed into
a hundred pieces. My favourite board was ruined, a gorgeous raspberry and magenta Corduroy nine foot single fin speed shape, a never to be replaced custom, I had even mixed the colours for the resin myselfNothing could hold back the tears, I felt my trip was ruined.
Mark and I traipsed around the dirty, smog ridden and humid Kuta being harassed by hawkers and shopkeepers in search of a longboard, to no avail. The smog made my eyes red and the humidity turned my new haircut into an afro to add to my woes, I started question why I am here. But the karmic wheel is always spinning on the Island of the Gods and when we were about to quit I found the perfect Bali longboard in a little back street shop, manned by a gaggle of typical Bali groms. So after the obligatory haggling I purchased a Town and Country high performance nine footer.
Once I escaped Kuta, I found the real Bali, a breathtaking island with many fantastic waves. We scored great waves at Medewi, Kuta Reef, Nusa Lembongan, Uluwatu and many spots up the east coast. Not once did I need a helmet as I revelled in the Indonesian perfection.
The people of Bali are some of the most beautiful on the inside and outside you will ever meet with an amazing culture going back thousands of years. After exploring the island, being invited by a local family to a small traditional ceremony, watching a historical play, viewing temples and witnessing the Balinese people approaching their difficult daily lives with such good humour and kindness, I was inspired to take many photos and produce an eBook: See ‘Those bagus days’
